Sun King is an innovative company in Kenya that sells quality solar energy solutions in Kenya for the purpose of reducing the reliance on the expensive source of fuel, such as kerosene and candles.

The company comes at time when:

"It is estimated that about 73 per cent of Kenyans live within 1-kilometre (0.6 miles) distance of a power transformer, yet only 18 per cent are connected to the grid. At its most basic level, Africa's energy poverty means there is often no electricity to power lights to study or to work at night. Advantage

  2. Another staff member on Facebook says, "Another advantage of solar energy is that in the long run, solar power is economical. Solar panels and installation involve high initial expenses, but this cost is soon offset by savings on energy bills. Eventually, they may even produce a profit on their use."
  3. The rechargeable battery has a charging port with cables that allows for a mobile phone to be charged. This eliminates the money people use in the rural areas to charge their phone batteries.
  4. The cost of the Sun King solar energy solution is KES 7,900 ($US79), which makes it one of the most affordable sustainable solutions.

In addressing the advantage of sustainable energy, such as the solar panel, the CEO of Greenlight Planet, Anish Thakkar thinks that the:

"Access to adequate, clean lighting is now as fundamental as access to water and other essential amenities, as it enables parents to provide for their children by extending their working hours after dark, and children can do their homework without straining their eyes or harming their lungs with fumes from lanterns that utilize petroleum or solid fuels." Disadvantage

  1. One obvious disadvantage is the lack of sun in some parts of the country. For example, for those people who live in cold areas where there is little sun, the rechargeable battery may not be charged to full capacity.
  2. In the event that the rechargeable battery loses its charge, the three bulbs stop working, or the solar panel stops to work, another rechargeable battery, solar panel, and bulbs will have to be purchased.

The above advantages eclipse the disadvantages of the Sun King solar energy solution. For people who are poor with no means to access the national electric grid, the solar energy solution can be considered to be the best alternative for other sources of fuel, such as candles and kerosene.
