Tesla Model X: Is this the way forward for the future cars in Kenya?

"If you had a choice on the type of vehicle to purchase, would you want to purchase a vehicle that will end your dependency on fuel?"

Tesla Model X is one of Teslas electric vehicles that has become popular in the United States. The vehicle, which is produced at the Tesla Factory in Fremont, California, is a crossover SUV that is known for its Falcon wing doors that help the vehicle owner to easily access the second and third-row seats.

The vehicle, which has been ranked seventh among the best-selling electric vehicles in the world, can cover a range of between 237 and 289 miles which is equivalent to between 381 and 465 km respectively. The development of the car was based on the Tesla Model S, a sedan electric vehicle without Falcon wing doors.

As of December 2016, it is estimated that the company has sold over 25,000 units all over the world. Even though the vehicle has had success selling more units, it has had problems. One of the problems was oil leakage and overheating of the falcon wing doors. However, this problem was solved after the company filed a lawsuit against Hoerbiger for not producing satisfactory doors.

So, what are the benefits that can make this vehicle the best future vehicle for people living in Kenya? One of the biggest benefits is obviously the end of dependency on fuel. Since the vehicle just needs electricity, the need for fuel is eliminated entirely. With increasing cost of fuel every day, this vehicle can help people save money.

The second benefit is the ability to cover long distances. The vehicle is capable of covering between 381 and 465 km. This implies that a driver driving to Mombasa from Nairobi may just need a single charge to complete the long journey. For those traveling to Nakuru and Eldoret from Nairobi, the kilometers are adequate.

The third benefit is its three rows of seats. Since it is a crossover SUV, the vehicle is capable of carrying about six people comfortably. This implies that big families can easily use this vehicle to carry six people instead of purchasing a fuel guzzler, such as a Toyota Prado Land Cruiser or a Land Rover Discovery 4.

The fourth benefit is low cost of service. Since the vehicle does not have a lot of moving parts and an engine that requires constant maintenance, the vehicle can take a long time before it is taken for service. While it has benefits, the biggest problem is electricity. With constant electricity problems, especially in the rural areas, a person with this vehicle may find it difficult to charge it.

I think one way to tackle this problem is to install a solar system in the house. Tesla offers power wall, which is a solar system that is capable of storing electricity from the solar panels. However, owners of the vehicles can install their own solar systems. This may provide the owner of the vehicle with adequate electricity to charge the vehicle. Overall, I think this vehicle is the best for people in Kenya who want to end their dependency on fuel.
