History

Lake Bogoria an active volcanic area lies at the beginning of Kenya's Northern Wilderness 32 square km. The western shore of the lake is lined with spouting geysers, bubbling geothermal pools and squirting steam. Massive flocks of Flamingos are attracted to this soda waters and you will see pink carpet in addition to fresh water springs at the lake edge attract an abundance of birds and wildlife.

Traveling

Diversion from the Nakuru Baringo road via Marigat will get you there with private transportation. There is also an airstrip that charter flights however it would be easier to organize safari with a group of people with a hired car or tour company.

Animals

The water springs of fresh water at the lake's edge attract wildlife and birds with abundance Fish Eagles that prey on flamingos. Animals that can be found at the lake shore include Zebra, Gazelle, Baboons and Great Kudu. Other animals are leopard, caracal, klipspringer and greater kudu.

Attractions


The park's hot springs and geysers are other attractions although it is not advisable to bath as the springs are at boiling point capable of boiling an egg. North of the park is Kesubo Swamp a wetland to the lake ecosystem and an area for birdwatchers to visit as it has over 200 recorded species of bird. Some local feature include Kesubo Swamp to the north and Siracho Escarpment to the east. At least 10 geysers can be found in four locations around the lake which erupt up to 5 meters high.

Maharagwe Recipe

Preparing Maharagwe Maharagwe is a Swahili name for beans. Maharagwe is usually eaten in Kenya at lunch time as a form of stew to accompanying food like rice, bread etc. Ingredients 1 chopped onion 1 cup boiled beans 2 chopped tomatoes 1 ½ table spoon turmeric 1 table spoon powder 1 table spoon chopped cilantro 1 ½ cup coconut milk 2 table spoon oil Salt Steps to follow Heat the oil in a cooking pot. Cook the onion gently until it turns light brown. Partially mash the boiled beans with a cooking stick. Add onion, tomatoes and mix well. Put the turmeric and seasoning and half the cilantro. Pour the coconut milk, stirring to blend all the ingredients. Cover the pot and leave to simmer for 10 minutes before garnishing with the remaining cilantro. Serve with rice.
