History

East of the Great Rift Valley, about 175 km North East of Nairobi lies Mt. Kenya at 5,199 meters the mountain is the second highest peak in Africa. It is a very important source of water providing about 50% of the country's population and produces 70% of Kenya's hydroelectric power. It has been described as one of the most impressive landscapes in East Africa with glacier-clad summits, diverse forests and Afro-alpine moorlands with other outstanding scenery. If you are planning to visit December to March and June to October are the best seasons to visit. Also, climbing may occur when the moon is near or full.

Traveling

The park can be reached on Nanyuki Isiolo road via Sirimon Track or Nyeri Nanyuki road near Naro Moru. Also Mount Kenya is 175 kilometers and reachable via Chogoria on the Embu Meru road about 150 km north of Nairobi. If you want to fly there there is a commercial airstrip to the park at Nanyuki.

Attractions

The major attractions include lakes, tarns, glaciers, wilderness, parks of great beauty, mineral springs, forest, endangered species of animals, unique montane, alpine vegetation with 11 species of endemic plants and high altitude plains.

Animals

Wildlife includes tree hyrax, white tailed mongoose, elephants, suni, black fronted duiker, bushbucks, water buck, elands, elephants, leopard, bongo, rhino, giant forest hog and 150 bird species recorded.
