History

Nairobi National Park is the only national park in the world with 80 recorded species variety of animals and birds close to a capital city. It is the main attraction for visitors in the city of Nairobi. The park also has a diversity of environments with characteristics of fauna and flora with open grass kind Savannah plains. There is a permanent river in the south while the western side has a highland dry forest. There are rocky valleys and gorges with scrubs, stretches of broken bush, long grass and man made dams attracting water dependent herbivores during the dry season.

Traveling

The park can be accessed by tarmac roads using normal vehicles "saloon car or four wheel drive" mainly through Lang'ata road from the city centre which is about 7 km.

Animals

There is diverse bird life with 400 species recorded although some of the species are not always present throughout the year "seasonal". The park houses rhinos and acts as their sanctuary making it a success and one of the few parks where you can actually see a black rhino in its natural habitat. In addition the park houses herbivores that get dispersed during the rains and concentrate in the park in the dry season. Other animals include lion, leopard, hyena, cheetah, black rhinoceros, birds, herbivores, buffalo, zebra, crocodile and wildebeest.

Attractions


There are attractions in the national park including walking trails at hippo pools, Nairobi Safari Walk, spacious picnic sites, orphanage, wildlife viewing and picnic activities.
